How to Achieve Your 2019 New Year’s Resolutions!

The most important investments require TIME. Setting and achieving a resolution requires focus, effort, and commitment. Changing old habits and developing new ones will not happen overnight. The following guidelines are meant to help you achieve all of your New Year’s Resolutions:

Focus on one resolution at a time. Make a list of your resolutions, prioritize them, and validate each of them.  Do they make sense to focus on right now?  It is wiser to focus on the right resolution than to start one you are not committed to.

Create a sense of accountability. Designate a friend, mentor, or companion for sharing successes, monitoring progress, and offering support. The benefit of involving others in your goals and plans is instant access to experience, knowledge, and wisdom— it also raises the bar of responsibility.

Research indicates that one of the qualities of those who are successful at making changes is that they have excellent support systems. Many of those who make resolutions never tell others about them. Consciously or subconsciously, that way if they fail no one will view them as a failure.

Communicating your resolution and intentions actually increases your accountability to the behavior. From the very beginning it is important to share your objectives and goals with those around you so that you can enlist their support. Knowing that you are accountable to someone other than yourself will help to keep you on track.

Persist until completed. A resolution achieved is a stunning example of consistency and hard work. If you fall behind schedule or are sidetracked for any reason, refocus! Just DO NOT give up! Do not surrender to temptation, difficulty or temporary failure. Persist until you achieve the goal.

Cultivate personal integrity. Integrity gives you the oxygen needed to cross the finish line of accomplishment. Your commitment determines your level of success. This commitment boils down to two essential tactics: DAILY ACTION AND REVIEW.

I wish you a New Year of health and happiness. Believe in yourself and you will achieve!

Good Luck and Happy 2019!

5 Tips for Keeping your New Year’s Resolution

How you plan to reach your goals and keep your resolutions for 2018?

As 2018 gets started, many of us are turning our focus to achieving more of our resolutions or goals this year. Besides “willpower,” what else can we do to increase our chances of reaching our goals and resolutions? Check out the following 5 tips of practical ways to reach your resolutions in 2018.

Premier concierge advocates for self care1.Include a resolution to care for yourself. Too often our resolutions are oriented toward making changes to ourselves and while that is good, remember to care for yourself. Include time for healing, renewal and rest.

2.Keep resolutions simple. While it sounds good to plan for a totally new you, we are better off setting simple, short-term goals that when complete give us a sense of accomplishment. Most people overestimate what they can do in the short run and underestimate what they can do in the long run.

3.Make notes. The act of writing and claiming can be an effective form of motivation. Making notes allows us to see our progress and find ways to our resolutions.

pivot4.Learn to “pivot.” Pivoting is a term used by business startups as a way to describe a change in direction. In other words, if one way does not work, stop going that way and find another way or a new direction.

5.Remember, you are in charge. When we set goals and resolutions, we are doing so based on the best information available at the time. Yet, life has a way of changing. Since you are in charge of your destiny, you can change your resolutions and goals as new information becomes available.

For a bonus tip, remember to ask for help from family, friends and service providers. Sometimes others can see ways of helping you achieve resolutions that you may not see. At the end of the year, you may be grateful that you sought assistance and achieved your resolutions.

Best of luck in 2018!

Proper food care could save you over $2000 per year!

Living in a nation of abundant food can create situations of waste adding up to $2200 per year for the average American family. According to a National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) report, approximately two-thirds of Americans’ food waste occurs mainly because food isn’t used before it spoils. We overload our grocery shopping carts, use only portions for recipes, then don’t properly save the rest. The remaining one-third of food waste comes from cooking more than we need, then throwing food away as well as confusing “sell by” and “use by” dates and throwing food out.

A recent post on the Chase website listed 7 ways to reduce food waste and save money in the process.

  1. Create meal plans

If you don’t know what you’re cooking, how will you know what to buy? Save yourself money and extra trips to the grocery store by making a weekly meal plan to ensure you’re buying only what you’ll need and use.

Don’t forget leftovers; factor those in to make sure they don’t end up rotting in the back of your fridge. Take them to work for lunch, use them to make a different recipe, or freeze them for future meals.

  1. Freeze it

If you can’t eat food that will spoil soon, consider freezing it. Fruits and vegetables can be easily chopped and frozen.

Alon Popilskis, a business owner in Congers, New York, has some tips on what to do with frozen fruits or vegetables. “I use frozen fruits in smoothies, shakes or when making sorbet,” he says. “Frozen herbs in oil just get thrown right into the pan or pot for cooking. Frozen vegetables can also be used in smoothies or juices.”

  1. Conduct fridge check-ins

Every day or two, check to see whether anything is starting to go bad or get overripe.

“Utilize one bin in your fridge for new produce, and in the other keep older produce that you know you need to be using up,” Henry suggests.

Keep track of the things that routinely end up going bad as you might be buying too much of them.

  1. Understand expiration and sell-by dates

Yogurt doesn’t immediately go bad at midnight on the date printed on the cover. Nor does bread go moldy on its “sell-by” date. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), companies use these dates to guess at the freshness of the food, and they are not related to safety.

Companies generally tend to be conservative in their estimates, and the USDA suggests you check the food to see if it looks or smells “off” or sour.

  1. Store food properly

Did you know that onions shouldn’t be stored in the fridge, or that tomatoes last longer and are less likely to be mealy if you leave them on the counter?

When storing produce in the fridge, consider Popilskis’ approach: He stores things that will wilt—like spinach or kale in a drawer with high humidity. “Things that rot quickly go into a drawer with low humidity settings,” he says.

  1. Use everything

Do you throw away beet greens? Don’t! You can add them to salads, soups, and veggie burgers. You can also use the stalks of kale in green smoothies or the bones from roasted chicken to make chicken stock.

“Broccoli stalks are great peeled and served right along with steamed broccoli florets,” Henry says. “I also like to blend or finely chop them into sauces to add extra nutrients and fiber.”

  1. Don’t over-serve

You might be tempted to give your family, friends, and guests big portions of food, but those generous servings will likely just end up in the trash. Allow people to serve themselves or give everyone smaller, more manageable portions.

By making these adjustments it’s estimated that Americans can reduce food waste by 15 percent, could help feed 25 million more Americans and prevent millions of tons of food from disposal in landfills.

Are you reasonable with yourself and your goals?

Each year, millions of people set out with new goals at the beginning of the year yet results show that 8% of people achieve their goals. In fact, some goal setting is more harmful than beneficial says Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist at Harvard Business School and author of the book “Presence.” The reason? We do not set reasonable attainable goals and instead of improving our situation in life we create more stress and strain. In “Presence,” she explores how being authentic to our “true selves” is essential for reducing stress that holds us back from our full potential.
Here are 4 recommendations Cuddy makes for setting reasonable goals:

1. Avoid “absolute” goals such as go the gym every day. This is unrealistic and does not allow for the interruptions of life.

2. Frame your goals in the positive. When we address changes in a negative way it can stir up feelings and emotions that can contribute to avoidance. Instead of saying “I want to stop eating junk food, say I choose to eat healthier foods.”

3. State your goals as desired outcomes that are attainable. For example, instead of setting a goal of walking 100 miles, break it down to 10 mile segments, so there will be 10 celebrations.

4. Avoid goals that focus on outside forces. Conditions can change and people will let you down. Set goals that are within your sphere of control and constantly set small goals that will lead to the larger desired outcome.
As a final recommendation, give yourself plenty of time to achieve your goals. We over estimate what we can do in the short run and underestimate what we can do in the long run. Plan for down time to make meaning of the life you are living, to appreciate the ups and downs, and to love the ones that count. If we can help add even an hour or two to your week, it might be the difference in an average and a great 2017!

Stop and Smell the Roses!

“Stop and smell the Roses” is a saying that really has nothing to do with Stop and Smell the Roses with Premier conciergeflowers at all!  It is a message, for each of us to stop rushing, stop working late, and a reminder that time passes quickly. Stop and enjoy the day, the moment and the minute. Each minute that you miss, is TIME lost and will not return to you again.

Take time to spend time with your family. Make sure you take at least one day a week to do something with your family and turn off your cell phone.

Remember special dates and celebrate special occasions together. Remember that your child, who may be 5 years old today, will never be that age again.  What makes them laugh?  What interests them?   Read to them, talk to them and hug them. Before you know it, they will be grown!

Make a special dinner for your family and set the table with the good dishes that you save for company. The best company that you can entertain is your own family.

Bring home a gift for your spouse. Remember how excited you were when you were dating and could not wait to see each other? Relive that day, and make that day special again. Surprises bring affection and a lasting relationship.

Laugh together. A sense of humor and a good laugh can smooth out a laugh together todaylong, hard day!

Remember that “One of the Things You Can’t Recover is Time”, so enjoy every family moment together and cherish the memories!

Goal Setting and Time Management for 2015

Premier Concierge likes 6 sigmaDo you know anyone who is a Six Sigma practitioner?  These people are skilled at establishing processes that generate results.  They see themselves as agents of change and that is exactly what many of us need and want in 2015, change.

As you think of your goals for the coming year, consider using the acronym SMART which stands for Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Reasonable, and Timely.  The details look something like this:

Specific – Specific goals are more likely to be achieved than nonspecific goals. Some questions to consider:

  • Who is involved?
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • When? Establish a time frame.
  • Why? Determine the specific reason, purpose or benefits of achieving a goal.

Measurable – Measuring progress toward a goal helps people stay on track, reach target dates and experience achievement.  Staying on track will result in a continuous improvement cycle that leads to motivation and goal attainment.

Premier Concierge uses SMART goalsAction Oriented – To keep from becoming overwhelmed, goals should be broken down into action steps.  Each step moves a person closer to successful goal achievement.

Reasonable – Avoid setting unreasonable expectations.  Personal and situational factors may influence the ability to reach a goal.  Some personal factors to consider are tiredness, physical well-being and other commitments.

Timely – Define start and end points to the goal.  Maintain commitment to these deadlines. Goals without deadlines or schedules for completion tend to be put aside for the day-to-day crises that invariably arise.

This leads right into TIME management. While TIME cannot be actually managed, we as people can manage what actions we take, how long the actions take, and the results generated with the TIME.  One of the easiest ways I know to check my usage of TIME is to keep a journal for 24 hours.  List what you do in 15 or 30 minute increments.  At the end of the 24 hour period, evaluate what you did and what you would like to change.  What habits would you like to change?

I hope this information is useful as you begin a new year.  If so, please let me know. I enjoy hearing from my readers and clients.  For more details on SMART goals and TIME Management check out the following article: http://www.isixsigma.com/implementation/change-management-implementation/set-smart-goals-better-manage-time/
